Karlsborg Fortress was built according to the 1819 defense plan, which meant that a central defense should be built inland. The fortress was primarily a camp fortress, but could also serve as the reserve capital of the kingdom. Several buildings within the fortress area are protected as architectural monuments. The 678 meter long end defense is Europe's longest building and has 2-3 meter thick walls, 263 gun gates and three towers.

Opened in 1962, the museum tells the story of the market square, which became the reserve capital of Sweden in the 19th century, about the central defense and the construction of the fortress, about all the units that worked in the fortress, and also reflects the history of military and civilian life in and around Karlsborg.

Karlsborg Fortress Museum also tells the story of the association that operates in the city today, in an exhibition spanning three centuries. The museum also includes a church - the garrison church. In the event of war, the church was to serve as the plenary hall of the Reichstag until 1925.

In addition to the parts of the museum shown in the exhibitions, the museum has a small library, a document archive and a picture archive.
