The island fortress Wilhelmstein is unique in Europe. Located in the middle of the Steinhuder Meer in the years 1761-67, it was considered impregnable at the time because the land side was surrounded by moor. The builder, Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe, equipped the buildings with numerous cannons for defense, the first German submarine was supposed to complete the defense.
The small miniature fortress in the Steinhuder Meer is a worthwhile excursion destination, and the crossing with the motor sailing boats of Steinhuder Personenschifffahrt makes a decisive contribution.
