        Typical is the diabase rock and the digestion of fossil pillow lava on a flank. Diabas is the old basalt of the Franconian Forest. Glowing magma penetrated the earth ages and solidified to a fine-grained volcanic rock. The rock is a mixture of soda lime feldspar and pyroxene. While young volcanic rocks of this composition are called basalt, the older ones from the Earth's antiquity are called Diabas. In quarries in the vicinity of the Höllental at Marxgrün and Berg, the hard rock is mined today. It is used as aggregate for concrete production and road construction.

          To build the Höllentalbahn, diabase was mined in a quarry until the end of the 19th century. There were two quarries in the valley, one of which is located directly on the Höllentalstrasse on the east bank of the Selbitz, the other just before the end of the valley path. Cuboids were obtained from the quarry for the railway embankment supports and the railway bridge that spans the path was also built from the diabase rock.
