The house was already mentioned in 1522. At Heiligen Kreuz 26 is the oldest dating still standing half-timbered house in the old town. It was built as a gabled gable-roof half-timbered building with a stepped gable protruding storey by storey with a Gothic ornament.

Today's old town in Celle was created over a period of around 600 years. The oldest half-timbered house is at Heiligen Kreuz 26 and dates back to 1526. Numerous half-timbered buildings that have not been firmly dated date back to around 1480. The Kalandgasse with the old Latin school is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered streets in the city. The Hoppener Haus from 1532 is probably the most famous half-timbered house in Celle; It is located on Poststrasse/Rundestrasse and is considered the most magnificent of its kind.
