Beautiful baroque town in the Altmühltal. A short break is worthwhile not only because of the gorgeous cityscape, the beautiful atmosphere and the charming rest stops. You will also find a lot of interesting facts here, for example in the Willibaldsburg with the Jura Museum or in the Altmühltal Nature Park information center.

Eichstätt the old university town is definitely worth heading for and stopping. In the city you can stop in one of the many cafés on the market square or you can just sit in the shade and watch the market go by.

The city is located on the Altmühl near the geographical center of Bavaria and in the triangle of the largest Bavarian regional centers Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg. Eichstätt is the capital of the Altmühltal. The northern slope of the valley above the town forms an extension of the Franconian Jura. The highest point in the urban area is the so-called Matterhorn, a former spoil dump near the district of Lüften, 574 meters high. At the lowest point at 384 meters, the Altmühl leaves the city. The city center is at an altitude of 393 meters. The city is the eponymous place of the Eichstätter Alb.

The market square was the center of the Eichstatt town, which developed in the Middle Ages between the cathedral and the St. Walburg monastery.

The parish church once stood here, the former Eichstätter citizen church. However, only the north wall of the Gothic building remained. In 1444 the town hall with the towering tower was built on the market square. The late Gothic building was redesigned in the early 19th century. Since then, the town hall has had a neo-baroque facade with a curved gable and balcony on the main front.

Baroque and Rococo city. Highlight is the Residenzplatz. Due to its baroque uniformity, it is one of the most beautiful town squares in Dtl. with the 16m high Marian column. On the northern side the prince-bishop residence. In the center of the city is the Cathedral of St. Salvator with the marble urn of St. Willibald, a companion of St. Boniface, who founded in 741 in "Eihstat" a missionary monastery. Nice also the market place with city hall, the former monastery church Notre Dame de Sacré Coeur with the information center Altmühltal. Very well worth seeing are the parks of the summer residence of the prince-bishops, today the administration of the only Catholic university in Dtl. and the Willibaldsburg with the Jura Museum.

The weekly market is held there on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, offering a wide range of regional and organic products. If you're feeling a little peckish, you can get a delicious Leberkäse roll from the butchers Kettner and Schneider.

The Eichstätt city bus also stops here, and the Eichstätt-Stadt train station is just a few minutes' walk away, either via the Spitalbrücke or the Herzogsteg (when it's rebuilt one day).

1/11/24 update: Kettner butcher is no longer there, but the Herzogsteg has been rebuilt, as has the Haifischbar.

The Residenzplatz was created in the 18th century by the prince-bishop's builder Gabriel de Gabrieli. Maurizio Pedetti took on the further design between 1776 and 1780 and expanded the square to include the fountain with the Marian column, the plastered parquet flooring and a curved linden half-round at the end in the east. [86]

In 1820, at the instigation of Eugène de Beauharnais, the square was redesigned into an English garden. [87] In the 20th century, the Bavarian State Monument Preservation recommended that the square be restored to its original state. After this was first rejected by the city council in 1970, it was later decided to implement this proposal. The redesigned square was finally inaugurated on October 25, 1985.
