    The Jüterbog Wilderness Area was used for military purposes for over 150 years. What remained was a huge, uninhabited, roadless area. Today, it is a nature reserve and provides a habitat for rare species such as the wolf, Bechstein's bat, and hoopoe.

    The diversity of the wilderness area's landscape ranges from sand dunes, heathland, and pioneer forests in the central area to wetlands and older forests on the outskirts. Along the way, you can discover how nature can develop dynamically without human intervention.

    The barren sandy soils are being cultivated by grasses, mosses, and lichens. The heathland gradually spreads across the barren ground, providing a habitat for many rare insect and bird species. Without further disturbance, a semi-open landscape can develop, and it doesn't take long for the first small pioneer trees to establish themselves among the heathland. Over the years, the trees steadily grow larger, so that the primeval forests of tomorrow slowly develop in the wilderness area.

    In wilderness areas, development never ends. Storms, for example, create open spaces in various places where natural growth begins anew. This is what gives wilderness its special character.

      The former Soviet military training area is now a nature reserve. A peaceful heath landscape with heather, small pines, and juniper bushes now thrives here. You can occasionally spot the remains of buildings among the plants.
