The Mountain Messner Museum is one of six museums designed by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner, the first man to climb Everest without the aid of supplemental oxygen. The one in Solda, called "MMM Ortles", deals with the theme of ice.

Reinhold Messner has undertaken more than a hundred trips to the mountains and deserts of this world since 1969 and has written three dozen books. During his expeditions he managed many first ascents, climbed all 14 eight-thousanders, crossed Greenland longitudinally and answered the riddle of the yeti. Between his travels, Reinhold Messner lives with his family in Meran and at Juval Castle near Naturns, where he runs mountain farms, writes and develops museum facilities such as the MMM's and the MMM-Messner Mountain Museum Sulden.
