          The Karlsbastion, like so many historical buildings not only in Lindau, quickly makes you realize that times were different. While today we are most likely to think of ski jumping when we hear the word ski jump, the term as used here comes from the military. Originally it meant temporary fortifications. Today it has remained in common parlance that someone might like to "entrench themselves behind paragraphs".

          The Karlsbastion in Lindau was probably built under Emperor Charles V (1500-1558). It was reinforced in 1619 and helped to secure the island to the west. Fortunately, there is nothing left to secure at the site today - at least not against attacks by military enemies. Instead, a stately elm tree has survived here for more than 100 years. However, it is definitely worth protecting, as it is one of the few elms in the city that has not fallen victim to the mass "elm dieback". Not a Lindau phenomenon, the disease has been wreaking havoc for thousands of years and unfortunately affects most European elm species.

          Three horse chestnut trees were also able to grow so undisturbed here that their branches extend far into the lake. So it is not surprising that the Karlsbastion was created as a central "hub" of the Bavarian Garden Show 2021 as part of the redesign of the rear island of Lindau. The wonderful view over Lake Constance towards the Alps, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Lindau, may also have played a role in the choice of location. Access to the Karlsbastion has been barrier-free since then, and a steel staircase now even leads directly down to the lake.

          A curiosity is the Maximilian monument, right next to the old elm. The Habsburg used to sit enthroned - as a statue with a base - at the seaport. But his monument was melted down in the Second World War. The need for raw materials may have been one reason for this, as metal became increasingly scarce as the war progressed. But above all, the Nazi ideology was bothered by it.

          The base was preserved and found a new home on the Karlsbastion. However, a new imperial statue of Maximilian was never placed on top again.
