                  Around the year 1500, people in Lindau began to build permanent defenses. What these could be good for became clear many years later in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) when the Swedes came. Fortunately, their attack was the only formal siege that Lindau ever had to endure. It was not successful for the attackers either. The Swedish troops failed due to resistance from the imperial troops and the citizens of Lindau.

                  Today, not much remains of these defenses. The Sternenschanze is the last one that can still be seen on the Lindau island circular trail. In peacetime, however, it has a completely different meaning: thanks to the small viewing platform, you have a wonderful view of the lake - and a real box seat for spectacular sunsets in the evening hours.
