A call barrier secures a level crossing that is rarely used by road users, which is usually off the beaten track and often cannot be seen by the responsible gatekeeper. The barrier booms are always closed and will only be opened if necessary – if this is possible without risk.

In the middle of 2020 there were still 482 call barriers in the area of the federal railways. This is 3.1 percent of the total of 15,391 level crossings. In the long term, for reasons of economy, call barriers should no longer be approved, they should be successively secured by level crossings with barrier monitoring or a danger zone free alarm system and backlog detection.
