Today, the Bassin du Paradis is a tourist attraction in Calais. It is close to Calais Nord, the shopping streets, the historic fishing quarter of Courgain Maritime and the Place du Minck with the monument to rescuers. You can enjoy restaurants with fish and seafood specialties and the unmissable Café du Minck, where maritime traditions still live on. Don't forget to buy fresh fish and seafood from the aubettes as you watch the return of the fishing boats.

The Bassin du Paradis dates back to the 12th century and is considered the birthplace of the port of Calais. It was dug under the reign of Mathieu d'Alsace. At that time, a warehouse was built to store goods in transit.
Due to its geographical location on the Strait of Dover and its proximity to England (only 24 miles away), the port of Calais played a crucial role in trade and maritime traffic.
The Bassin du Paradis has been dredged, enlarged and modernized over the centuries. It once housed up to 100 boats. Although it is no longer a major port, it remains an important historical relic.
