The monument-symbol "Steam Engine" was created in memory of the events of the Civil War of 1918-1922. In January 1918, an armed uprising of Red Guard workers broke out in the city. The railway station was an important stronghold of the White Guard junkers, so the militias decided to attack the building by ramming it with a laden locomotive. On February 1, 1918, a train filled with oil and firewood crashed into the wall of the station. The building was not damaged, but the locomotive attack forced the White Guards to leave their shelter and flee. The station came under the control of the Red Guards, like the whole of Taganrog.
