    Description of Windmotor Brakepolder

    Introduction


    Presumably for the benefit of the polder De Brake, built in 1927 WIND MOTOR, which is currently (1994) still in use. The wind engine is located south of Medemblik, north of the polder and on the south side of Brakeweg. The engine was supplied by the "Eerste Nederlandsche Windmotorfabriek" in Groningen.

    Description

    The wind motor consists of a concrete foundation with auger bowl and auger, as well as a steel construction supporting the motor body and wind wheel. The polder water is supplied from the southwest via a trip to the wind motor.

    The motor body consists of a wind wheel with a diameter of 7 m, with 4 blades, carried by six arms mounted on a hub of the wheel. This hub is lubricated at the front by an oil dripper. In addition to a wind wheel, the motor body consists of a relatively narrow main vane and a side vane with which the position of the mill is adjusted to the wind speed by means of tension chains.

    The tower supporting the engine body is constructed of four angled steel struts that meet at the top. They are stiffened with horizontal and diagonal cross connections.

    Halfway up the tower, a platform has been created that leads to the top via a ladder.


    The vertical motor shaft is inserted through the center of the tower, which drives the auger with the aid of conical cogwheels. The cogwheels are lubricated by oil drippers.

    The steel mortar rests in a mortar bowl that is covered with a wooden platform. The pivot points of the auger and the cog wheels of the transmission are lubricated with the aid of oil droppers.

    The pumped-up water pours into the middle course of the foundation, from where it flows through a concrete culvert to the chimney breast. The outlet consists of two concrete wing walls.

    Valuation

    The wind engine is of general interest because of its cultural-historical and civil-technical value. It has been preserved intact and has become a rare example of an innovative form of wind drainage, which was introduced in the Netherlands after ca. 1910 from America and was used fairly generally and has become an element as such. from the history of water management in the Netherlands.

    Due to its location and main shape, the wind motor is of defining value in the open polder landscape.
