Formerly a Lombard stronghold then an imposing castle of the Florentine defense network, it was destroyed in 1260 by the Sienese militias. Rebuilt and transformed into a suburban villa, it belonged, among other families to the Nasi, important Florentine wool makers. An important winery has been based here since the 1930s.

Nearly all the summits of the hills and hillocks overlooking the Arno Valley between Candeli and Volognano were once crowned by castles, turreted houses, and towers that formed a line of fortifications blocking the valley to defend Florence.
Poggio a Luco, perched on a 412-meter-high hill, was part of this line. Despite its transformations, it retains some defensive structures, including the gate and the remains of the projecting gallery with corbels and machicolations. (From Tuscan Castles - Facebook page)
