I am fascinated by such historical sites and the remains of this ring wall are really interesting; the lovingly laid out herb garden in particular fits in well here. The fact that the fireplace is open to the public and can even be used is astonishing in this day and age and I also find the tolerance and trust in responsible use of it very pleasing. This makes it even easier to imagine yourself back in time by the open fire.

The "Old Castle" of Hollenstedt is located around 1.5 kilometers south of Hollenstedt in the Este river valley. Today you can still see the traces of a ring wall with a diameter of 80 meters and a moat in front of it. The wall, which was originally eight meters thick and up to four meters high, consisted of a wooden structure that was covered with turf on both sides. Casemates were built on the back, vaults secured against enemy fire. There were several houses inside the wall. The castle was built in the late ninth century and apparently only existed for a few decades.
The current form of the castle wall is based on a reconstruction in 1980 and reflects the impression that the complex must have made after it was abandoned.

Beautifully done and informative. Supposedly from the time of Charlemagne. The castle has a beautiful garden and information boards from archaeologists.
