The Red Light District of Sluis is interesting because of its natural and cultural-historical values. The ramparts date from the 14th century. At that time, Sluis flourished as a trading town due to its location on the Zwin. The Zwin was an important estuary and waterway. At the end of the 15th century, the silting up of the Zwin caused a sharp decline in trade and prosperity in Sluis. But Sluis remained important as a fortress during the Eighty Years' War (1568 to 1648).

Nowadays, nature flourishes here. Many characteristic plants grow here and various bird species breed here. In addition, this is one of the few places where you will find the rare tree frog. There is plenty to see and experience during your visit to the Red Light District of Sluis.

The city fortifications have had to do their job in the turbulent history of the city. For example, in 1437 the Westpoort was already destroyed by the citizens of Bruges who came to enforce their staple rights in Sluis. In 1587, Sluis was occupied by the Duke of Parma. In 1604, after a long siege, Prince Maurits van Nassau conquered the city from the Spaniards. In 1794 the city was heavily shelled by the French. In 1944 the city was bombed flat by the Canadians, but city walls could of course no longer help here. Sluis nowadays still has two city gates (the East Gate and the South Gate) and a remnant of another gate (the Steenen Beer).

In the 14th century, the Wallen van Sluis (Sluis Walls) were built as fortifications to protect the then important trading town of Sluis. The Spanish conquered the town in 1587, and in 1604, it was recaptured by the troops of Prince Maurits. The Stenen Beer (Stenen Beer), the Waterpoort (Water Gate), the Zuidpoort (South Gate), and the Oostpoort (East Gate) are the four remaining city gates that are part of the fortifications.

Tip: The Sluis city walls are a wonderful place for a walk: surrounded by water and nestled in greenery, they are the perfect place to take a breather. Information panels along the path provide information about the history of the city walls and gates. The route is approximately 4 km long.
