This is the oldest part of the Herkenrode site that still exists, dating back to the sixteenth century. The dilapidated half-timbered building is the very first sleeping quarters of the choir ladies (sisters). Each sister had her own cell with a small garden behind it. On the west side was a cloister that took them directly to the church.
The building next door, now without a roof, was originally used as an infirmary, the sick ward for the sisters. Later it was also furnished as a sleeping quarters. The third building, the “new infirmary,” was built in 1658.
