The lighthouse was planned in 1883 as part of the German-Dutch project Lighting of the Unter-Ems as one of five Leitfeuern and completed in 1890. On 1 October 1891, all five lighthouses were put into service together. Each of the five beacons was responsible for a fixed section on the ship's route between the North Sea and Emden (Wikipedia).

The Campener lighthouse is also often referred to as the little brother of the Paris Eiffel Tower. This is not least because the two towers were built in the same year.
The three-legged, red-white painted steel leg construction was completed after four years of construction in 1892 and is the highest lighthouse of the Federal Republic of Germany with an amazing height of 65 meters.
