The road that led from the main entrance to the headquarters area to the camp gate was called “Caracho Way”. The SS had deliberately called him that.
Prisoners arriving in Buchenwald were chased at a run, with “Caracho,” to the camp gate by shouting and beating SS men and their dogs. Whether they were herded together after pogroms or completely exhausted after days of rail transport – the short, asphalted route left a deep impression on many people.
There used to be an elaborately crafted wooden signpost here with the inscription "Caracho Way", which can be viewed in the permanent exhibition in the camp.
