Frauenwald is home to one of the rare raised bogs in the Thuringian Forest.
Due to its climatic, geological and geomorphological conditions, Thuringia has always been one of the low-moor federal states. Only in the Thuringian Forest and in the Western Slate Mountains do bogs appear more frequently. Here they form a string of pearls along the precipitous crest and highlands. There are four larger raised bogs, Saukopf-, Schützenberg-, Beerbergmoor and Schneekopfmoore along the Rennsteig, in the ridges of the Thuringian Forest in the heights between 800 m and almost 1000 m above normal altitude (NHN).
The area of the bogs in the Thuringian Forest is compared to the moorlands of the neighboring low mountain ranges such as Erzgebirge or Harz quite small and is between 2 and 15 ha. In addition, there are two significant hillside moors, the Marktal and morass with a small rain moorka salmon east of Frauenwald and the Kerngrundsumpf west of Oberhof. The precipitation is about 1200 to 1300 mm in the year and is about twice as high as in the Thuringian Basin.
Already very early, for at least 250 years was intervened in the Thuringian moors. Drainage ditches have been created to extract peat locally. The peat extraction is often broken. Subsequently, many dehydrated peat bodies were reforested. Only the smallest islands of vital moors with so-called "Hungerfichten" were preserved.
