The Sachsenstein in the Thuringian Forest, with a height of 915 meters, is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. It is part of the stamp points in the Thuringian Forest and should not be confused with the viewing peak of the same name in Saxon Switzerland. The area around the Sachsenstein impresses with its idyllic valleys, dense forests and beautiful panoramas, especially of the Schneekopf, which at 978 meters is the highest point in the area.

There are many hiking trails that lead to Sachsenstein, with starting points in places like Gehlberg, Elgersburg, Suhl, Stützerbach and Schmücke. The hikes vary in length and can last between two and a half and seven and a half hours, depending on the route. The path to the summit leads over footpaths and forest paths, which are quite demanding and require a good level of fitness.

Once at the summit, hikers can enjoy the breathtaking view of the Thuringian Forest. There is a bench on a rocky outcrop from which there is a wonderful view over the green forests. The Sachsenstein is also ideal for connecting with other surrounding mountains, such as on the 30-kilometer-long summit hiking trail.

Other attractions nearby include the Rennsteig, the Seiffartsburg, the Schneekopfmoor at the Teufelskreis and the upper reaches of the Zahmen Gera. The best time for a hike is usually from May to October, depending on the weather.

However, visitors should be careful not to leave any rubbish behind in order to preserve the natural beauty of the Sachsenstein. Despite the somewhat overgrown view in some areas, the Sachsenstein still offers magnificent views and is a worthwhile hiking destination in the Thuringian Forest.
