      There used to be a city palace on this square, which was destroyed by fire in 1769 and the market for poultry and herbs took place here. This was quickly followed by houses that lined the market with small doors (according to the legend of dwarfs and court jesters from the bishop's court).
      The market was named after the creator Marcel Gayot.
      Tip: In addition to the rush of tourists from the nearby cathedral, you can find a little peace and quiet in a café.

              Pretty and leafy square around the center of which numerous restaurants are crowded. It is just behind the cathedral and is easily accessible. At night when all the lights are on, it's pretty lively and... romantic.

                Numerous houses lined the square: first a salt warehouse on the Rue des Écrivains side, then a large hostel on the Rue des Sœurs as well as shops and residential buildings, especially beautiful half-timbered houses that can still be admired today (house numbers 12, 15 and 21). These houses have very low doors, as if they were built for very small people: according to legend, dwarves, court jesters and buffoons who were employed at the bishop's court lived here.

                It is currently one of the most popular meeting places in Strasbourg for young people and students, who gather here when the weather is nice.

                Since 2003, the square has housed a beautiful cast iron sculpture by Daniel Pontoreau called “Pierre trouée”, which is reminiscent of a mysterious meteorite.
