Many churches and little churches, known as the "Mortini", were dedicated to San Rocco following the plague epidemic brought about by the descent of the Lanzichenecchi in 1631.
These religious buildings generally had dungeons or crypts in which the bodies of the plague-stricken dead were buried.
The Sanctuary of San Rocco in Aviatico, on the other hand, had been erected in thanksgiving because the local population had been spared from the plague epidemic that had struck almost all of northern Italy.
