Forest monastery

Kloster Wald was founded in 1212 by Burkhard von Weckenstein as a Cistercian monastery. In the second half of the 15th century, the dominion included 19 places. Through donations and purchases, the property extended to Lake Constance and the Hegau. During the 30-year war, Kloster Wald was almost completely destroyed, but rebuilt. In the 17th century two new monastery wings were built and the monastery church was redesigned by Jos Beer as a single-nave baroque-rococo church. In 1806 the monastery passed to the princely house of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen as a result of secularisation. Until then, an average of 30 nuns belonged to the convent. The nuns of the abolished monastery were allowed to live there until their death. In 1826 the monastery church was bought back by the Archdiocese of Freiburg and has served as a parish church ever since.

Home school Kloster Wald

(Gymnasium - boarding school - training workshops)

On May 18, 1946, the Benedictine nuns of Saint Lioba (Freiburg-Günterstal) founded the home school Kloster Wald, a boarding school for girls in the Christian spirit. Over the years, today's school has developed from humble beginnings. The monastery buildings were extensively renovated in the years 1980-1990 and supplemented by an extension, which was followed in 2006 by a new kitchen wing. In 1950, the school was affiliated with training workshops, in which the schoolgirls could learn a craft in addition to their grammar school education and complete it with a journeyman's examination. Many schoolgirls take up the offer of professional training as a carpenter, wood sculptor or tailor.
