The sailing training ship Niobe, which carried primarily young officer candidates with no experience, capsized on July 26, 1932, following a change in the weather. Although several ships quickly arrived to rescue the crew, 69 people drowned.

40 were rescued and brought safely to shore.

Approximately four weeks after the tragedy, the wreckage and the bodies were recovered and buried in Kiel, from where the ship had departed. The teacher initially erected a simple memorial with the support of the Gammendorf community.

One of the ship's masts rises into the sky within sight of the accident and still serves as a memorial and place of remembrance. The Niobe Memorial was unveiled on October 15, 1933. The inscription on the bronze plaque was particularly controversial. It reads:
"It is not necessary that I live, but it is necessary that I do my duty."

This must be viewed in the context of German history and Hitler's rise to power nine months earlier.

Although the saying is obviously inappropriate from today's perspective,
it is nevertheless a testament to history and a contemporary representation.

In 1966, the Niobe Memorial was repositioned and a bronze plaque was added. Survivors of the shipwreck had called for a fundraising campaign.

The former commander of the training ship delivered a moving eulogy.

Also present were survivors of the disaster and former passengers and officers of the Fehmarnbeld lightship, which risked its own life to selflessly rescue the shipwrecked. On the day of the sinking, ceremonies and a wreath-laying ceremony are held annually at the Niobe Memorial.

The story of the four-masted schooner began in 1913 in Frederikshavn, Denmark. After sailing under the Danish and Norwegian flags, the Niobe came to Kiel during the First World War. In 1922, it was acquired by the German Navy, converted, and operated as a sail training ship. The ship's history lives on not only on the beach at Gammendorf. 33 graves of the victims of the disaster can be found at Kiel's North Cemetery. The ship's anchor is located on a memorial stone for the fallen of the First World War. A concrete replica of the training ship can be found at the Kriebstein Dam in Saxony.

This monument is then hidden behind trees a little off the bike path. You have to push your bike the last few meters through the sand. This is a very lovingly designed monument with a tragic history.

Here at Gammendorfer Strand a mast reminds of the tragic end of the crew of the sailing training ship Niobe. On 26.07.1932 the ship sank northwest of Fehmarn. Of the 109 -strong crew 69 sailors were killed.
