A plaque at the bottom of the bronze monument describes the life of Johanne Henriette Marie Müller. Born out of wedlock in Dessau in 1841, she came to Hamburg with her mother shortly thereafter, to the Neustadt district. At the age of thirteen, she was already on the road as a hawker with a basket full of lemons. She bought the fruit from the sailors on the ships in the harbor. With the shout "Zitroon, Zitroon, fresh Zitroon!" she became well known.

In the evenings she was also out and about in the pubs of St. Pauli and was also willingly filled with caraway seeds so that she would sing one of her rough little songs. She wasn't aware that people were also making fun of her. The excessive consumption of alcohol later made her conspicuous and in 1894 she was committed to the "Friedrichsberg mental asylum". There she went through cold turkey and was then admitted to the open prison. She stayed there until her death in 1916.

The diagnosis "cretinism" in congenital hypothyroidism or iodine deficiency did not exist at that time. This led to their short stature and intellectual underdevelopment.

Henriette Müller is considered a Hamburg original, but just like the Hummel, the originality of the Lemon Jette does not stand for success, but for a dreary outsider existence. By combining illegitimacy, poverty and disabilities in one person, the Lemon Jette was relegated to the fringes of society.
