It was built at the Yaroslavl plant as a mortar, and in September 1942 entered service with the Volga military flotilla, taking part in the Battle of Stalingrad. Later, as part of the Dnieper military flotilla, the boat participated in the liberation of Kyiv, and as part of the Pinsk military flotilla, in the liberation of Belarus. During the fighting, the boat managed to get 17 damage. In the summer of 1944, Ya-5 was converted into a minesweeper boat, received No. 772 and took part in clearing the Black Sea from mines. Participated in the operation to liberate Taganrog from occupation.
