Roman mountain sanctuary

Since 2005, the remains of a Roman mountain sanctuary have been discovered during archaeological excavations on the Calmont mountain plateau. A temple was built at the highest point on the mountain plateau. Its ground plan corresponds to the type of Gallo-Roman temple common in the Gallic and Germanic provinces. The Roman mountain sanctuary was built on a special place given by nature. It was visible from afar from the plateaus of the Eifel and Hunsrück. From the temple there is an imposing view of the landscape with the narrow loop of the Moselle around the Petersberg with the Peterskapelle and the mountain cemetery, which is still in use today. In late Roman times there was a fortification on the mountain ridge of the Petersberg. Massive wall remains and several small finds from the 4th century AD point to another well-fortified Roman building - presumably a security post with a station for Moselle shipping - on the tip of the headland around which the Moselle flows. They were found during excavations in the ruins of the Stuben monastery church in recent years. According to the evaluation of the finds so far, the temple complex on the Calmont also existed mainly in the late Roman period from the 3rd to the second half of the 4th century AD and formed the religious center for the residents of the nearby Roman estates on the Moselle and on the high terraces on both sides of the river valley.
