history

In 1884 the construction of a wooden observation tower began.

In 1899 the Taunus Club built an iron observation tower.

In 1999 the tower was renovated by the city of Königstein and increased to 14.5 m.

In 2012, the tower was no longer accessible for safety reasons and, according to initial considerations, it should be demolished. However, concerns were raised among the population and alternative solutions were sought.

In 2014, an AG was founded in the Mammolshain district to look for alternatives to demolition.

In 2016, the Hardtbergturm e.V. support association (hardtbergturm.de) was founded with the aim of supporting the construction of a new, even taller tower.

In 2021, the demolition and construction of the new Hardtberg tower finally took place.

The new Hardtbergturm is not only suitable for cyclists but especially for hikers. Open 24/7, it is at the end of the safari route from zoo to zoo not far from the Opel Zoo forest car park.

With the new Hardtberg Tower, a spectacular experience point has been created between the spa town of Königstein and its Mammolshain district. At an altitude of 409 m above sea level. Located at NN, the 32 meter high tower offers a breathtaking view over the Taunus slopes, the Rhine-Main plain with the Frankfurt skyline and the castles of Königstein, Falkenstein and Kronberg.

If you want to experience the view from the viewing platform of the spectacular experience point in the RheinMain Regional Park, you have to climb 140 stairs to get to the platform. On the way there, four exploration levels give you the opportunity to pause and enjoy new perspectives over the treetops and slopes of the Taunus. The 80-ton steel structure impresses with both its elliptical basic shape and its uniform silk-grey paintwork, which blends with the sky as it rises in height.

The new tower stands on the exact spot where the first wooden Hardtberg tower was built by the Taunus Club in 1884. However, this did not last long and was replaced in 1899 by an iron structure, initially 12 meters high. In 2012, the tower finally had to be closed due to dilapidation and demolished in May 2021 to make way for the current tower. The new Hardtberg Tower is open to the public 365 days a year.

New steel building from 2021 in the traditional location of an observation tower. 140 steps to the top platform at a height of around 26 meters. Above the treetops on a lower platform with the 84th step. Great view in all directions, in ideal weather as far as the Vogelsberg, Spessart and Odenwald as well as the Rhine Graben to the south. To the north is Falkenstein Castle in front of Altkönig and Grosser Feldberg, and to the west is Königstein Castle. The ridges from Kapellenberg to Atzelberg limit the view to the west. Otherwise, the Main plain with the Frankfurt skyline can be seen in full. As I said: in ideal weather!
