The Castello Estense is a castle of the family d'Este in Ferrara. In the 14th and 15th centuries, when Ferrara flourished under the Este, the Castello served as a residence for the Dukes. Here was also the rich art collection of the family. After the Este had moved their headquarters to Modena at the end of the 16th century, the Castello lost in importance. After the unification of Italy, it was bought by the province. Today it is the seat of the provincial administration. During the severe earthquake in Emilia Romagna in May 2012, the building, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ferrara, suffered heavy destruction.

The Estense Castle was built in 1385 as an instrument of political and military control. The first stone was laid symbolically on September 29th, St. Michael's Day, protector of city gates and fortresses.

The work was commissioned to the architect Bartolino da Novara, already the architect of the castle of Pavia and then to that of Mantua, by the Marquis Niccolò II d'Este who considered it essential to equip himself with a powerful repressive machine after an impressive popular revolt unleashed in May of that same year. The Marquis was initially granted a loan of 25,000 ducats by the lord of Mantua Francesco I Gonzaga. [1]
At the news of yet another tax increase, the inhabitants of Ferrara rose up and demanded the delivery of Tommaso da Tortona, councilor of the Marquis and responsible for collecting taxes. Tommaso, after having duly received the Sacraments, was handed over by the marquis to the enraged crowd, who literally broke it.

Located in the historic center of Ferrara, it is one of the many wonders that our country is able to offer. Externally very beautiful, it can offer elegance and magnificence. Internally a bit sparse, dark and cold thanks also to the presence of the numerous cells reserved for prisoners and not suitable for those who suffer from narrow and closed spaces. In about a couple of hours it is possible to admire the castle and climb to the top of the tower from which you can see the whole city of Ferrara.
