    The abbey was founded in 1007 by the Count of Mantua Tedaldo di Canossa (Matilde's paternal grandfather), who dedicated it to himself and to his late wife Willa, [2] through a donation to the Benedictine monks of half of the land that was between the Po and Lirone rivers, an important site for ensuring the control of river navigation.
