The Sacrario di Cristo Re in Messina is an imposing tomb that was built in 1937 for the remains of those who died in the two world wars. The Baroque architecture was inspired by the Basilica in Superga, designed by Messina architect Filippo Juvarra. The location of the sanctuary offers one of the most beautiful views of the Strait of Messina.

The Sacrario, in English sanctuary or memorial, has the third largest bell in Italy and was built from the remains of the Castle of Matagrifone, a tower of which was included in the construction of the building.

The Sacrario guards the remains of numerous fallen soldiers and civilians of the First World War. To commemorate them, the gong chimes from the Sacrario's bell tower every time the sun goes down.

The building is constructed in an octagonal shape. The lower part is decorated with eight bronze statues representing the eight virtues: Faithfulness, Hope, Mercy, Wisdom, Justice, Strength, Temperance and the Virtue of Religion.
