The title of a former "Imperial Abbey" alone makes it clear that this was an important monastery. The tomb of Saint Willibrord is located in the crypt, and on the Way of St. James, pilgrims make a special detour via Echternach to pay a visit to this saint.

The Reich Abbey of Echternach in the Luxembourg city of Echternach was a Benedictine monastery called St. Peter and Paul (previously a collegiate monastery) and imperial territory in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. In addition to large parts of the convent buildings, the reconstructed Basilica of St. Willibrord has been preserved from the monastery. The territory of the former imperial abbey of Echternach is today mostly in the Federal Republic of Germany, to a lesser extent in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and in the Kingdom of the Netherlands[1]. The Basilica of St. Willibrord and large parts of the convent buildings are in Echternach. As a Free Imperial Abbey, it was directly under the Reich, owned a territory under the Reich and only ever recognized three lords, namely God, the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor.

The impressive Willibrordus Basilica is considered the most important religious monument in the country. Built in the 11th century, it was rebuilt in the original Romanesque style after heavy destruction during World War II. The crypt contains frescoes from the 11th century and houses the tomb of the saint. A Willibrordus source attracts many pilgrims seeking healing from their illnesses (including eczema). In the middle of the city lies the old parish church of St. Peter and Paul.
