The Hohllay Cave with its tunnels and rock formations is a great destination in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. The Romans already cut stones from the rock for their building projects and mining continued in the Middle Ages. In particular, millstones were broken from the sandstone rocks. You can still clearly see the traces of the tools on the cave walls.

Easily one of the best highlights in the region! The bizarre patterns in the rock are due to mining from the Medieval times till the 19the century. The left over pillars keep it from "caving in" and gives it a somewhat Cathedrally feeling.
In the past, the material for the millstones required in the region was mined here and the hollow layers were created by human hands. This also applies to the immediately adjoining amphitheater, but no breakthrough was made here and so the cave now serves as a small concert stage. wandersuechtig.de/luxemburg-muellerthal-e1-rundweg-echternach-berdorf

The rock formations are simply breathtaking!
The shady place in the cave is also ideal for a short break, during which you can admire the unique mining work of the Romans.
Regardless of whether it is a long-distance hike or a short walk, here you have a distance from everyday life within a very short time.

Here, as in many places, millstones were mined. Hence the ring-shaped stone forms in the rock everywhere.

The Hohllay ("hollow rock") is a rock hollowed out by human hands. The Romans have already extracted earthenware for buildings here. In the Middle Ages there was a lot of activity in this quarry, as the ban mills of the Oeren monastery (near Trier) were obliged to only use millstones that were broken here. This is an old medieval mine where our ancestors extracted rocks for millstones. The remaining pillars prevent the cave from "collapsing" and give it the feel of a cathedral.

Traces of the tools used to dig the rock can still be seen on the rock faces today. The Hohllay was therefore not only formed by the effects of nature, but also by breaking off the boulders. Thus, the cave was largely created by human hands.

The cave is easy to walk through and, depending on the weather, offers sun or rain protection. 😊
