The November Pogroms of 1938 left deep scars on Aachen as well. The city's former synagogue was destroyed and burned down on the night of November 8-9, 1938. Decades later, in 1995, a new synagogue was built on a different site.
Today, an impressive glass sculpture by Heinz Tobolla stands in front of it. He created a Star of David from stacked glass plates, broken at the edges, which appears different depending on the light. The artwork was unveiled on November 8, 1984, and serves as a memorial against hatred and violence.

In front of the new synagogue is a monument depicting the history of Israel as the Star of David. The old synagogue was consecrated here on September 19, 1862, but it was desecrated and destroyed by the National Socialists on November 8, 1938.
