The first written mention of Dändorf dates back to 1356.

In the 18th century the salt road led from Bad Sülze over Dändorf to Wismar and Schwerin. The salt was transported on flat Recknitz and the Saaler Bodden to Dändorf with shallow, almost 20 meters long boats (the pews). From here it went with carts and later with wagons on to the coast of Dierhagen. With the help of reef boats, which were later replaced by yachts, they were transported on to Wismar. Dändorf benefited from this function as a transshipment point. So the village street was paved, so that the salt transport did not get stuck in bad weather. This street is still preserved today and registered as a monument.

In the 19th century, the increasing nature of the settlement changed due to increasing shipping. In the 1830s, 49 sailors lived in Dändorf. It flourished between 1860 and 1870. At that time it was considered one of the richest Mecklenburg villages.

In 1867, the first privately-operated navigation preparation school was built, in which sailors learned their knowledge during the winter months in order to subsequently acquire their officer's patents. The emerging steamship however ended the wealth of the village.

In the 20th Century was looking for new sources of income and it was based on the bathing culture of Dierhagen and Wustrow. Today tourism is the main source of income.

The small harbor of Dändorf is also an idyllic place to enjoy the view of the bay.
