Today, there are few indications in Hamburg-Wandsbek that there once was a famous castle with an equally famous park.

Between 1772 and 1778, the Danish Finance Minister Heinrich Carl Graf von Schimmelmann built a magnificent castle on the foundations of Wandesburg, the former manor house of a noble estate. At the same time, he also had the castle park redesigned, which is still remembered today by the Wandsbeker wood.

The approximately two kilometer long strip of forest between Wandsbeker Markt and Osterkamp in the Marienthal district of Hamburg is now an important local recreation area for residents. Until 1860, the area was part of the estate around the castle, when it was saved from destruction by a courageous decision by the local administration at the time .

Although the forest was later cut into four trees by the Hamburg-Lübeck railway and some streets, it still developed into a popular local recreation area. The Wandsbeker wood is ideal for jogging and walking or just for a stroll. Numerous benches, for example at one of the ponds in the middle of the beautiful old trees, mainly oak and beech, invite you to linger. There are playgrounds and a soccer field with soccer goals for children.

The Wandsbeker Geholz is a 26.6-hectare public park in the Marienthal district of Hamburg, Wandsbek district.

The approximately two kilometers long and up to 200 meters wide strip of forest is a remnant of the former Wandsbeker estate.

The associated castle was built at the end of the 18th century by the merchant and slave trader Heinrich Carl von Schimmelmann, who also had the castle park redesigned.

From 1766 to 1770, Schimmelmann laid out a pleasure garden with an avenue of linden trees here.

The Lindenallee disappeared before the Second World War.

In 1857, the merchant Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn acquired the estate, divided it up and sold the first large plots of land near the castle for the construction of a villa colony based on the English model, today's Marienthal.

When Carstenn also wanted to have the wooded area cleared, the Wandsbeker Fleckenverwaltung decided to buy it.
