Hammer Park can look back on a long and varied history. In the bombing nights of 1943, the park was essentially destroyed and rebuilt after the war. Those who come to the city via the Horner Kreisel, the Sievekingsallee, usually drive carelessly past this beautiful, large park. It is worth the visit! The park is bigger than you think.

About half of the park area is overgrown with historic old trees from the 17th to 19th centuries and mainly contains oak, beech, linden, birch, maple, hornbeam, but also some exotic species such as magnolia and evergreen yew. There are a striking number of so-called “two-in-hand”, that is, old trees with two or more trunks as a result of deforestation during the French period. The oldest tree is a linden tree on the edge of the sports stadium, the age of which experts estimate to be 400 to 600 years.

Hammer Park is not that conspicuous. It is located between major traffic axes towards the east of the city. Its edges are partly well wrapped in greenery, partly hidden by parked cars on the side of the road, so that sometimes you can only just make out its presence.
In summer in particular, the park is popular with all generations because of its large lawns. The days when the park was locked in the evenings are long gone. If you stand in the middle of this green oasis, you can hear the dull noise of traffic from afar. At the same time, however, it also becomes clear why parks in Hamburg in particular were and are important for the city, important for the character of the district and, above all, important for the people long before the climate debate.
