The oldest transporter bridge in Germany crosses the river Oste between the municipality of Osten and the city of Hemmoor (district Basbeck) and is the most striking structure in the Elbe-Weser triangle. For more than 100 years, a 38-meter high portal made of steel framework has towered over the river with a length of 80 meters.

This masterpiece of engineering was built in 1909 by MAN (plant Gustavsburg near Mainz). The construction of a new river crossing was necessary because the railway line Harburg - Cuxhaven was opened in 1881 and operated until the construction of the Schwebefähre at the same place Prahmfähre no longer meet the growing demands in passenger and freight transport.

The "Eiffel Tower of the North", as the transporter bridge is also called, was built so high that the many sailing ships with their tall masts that sailed the river at that time could safely pass underneath.

The gondola is powered electrically, as it was the first day. The engine and the complete drive, which consists of four 3.70 meter wheels running on rails, are located in the top of the car.

The transporter bridge has become the symbol of the entire region and the German ferry route and nobody can escape the fascination of this building. There are still eight ferries of this type worldwide.

Preservationists and a citizens' initiative, which emerged in 1975, the current promotion company for the preservation of the Schweighähre Osten-Hemmoor e.V., have since prevented all plans to demolish the "Eiffel Tower of the North" and will continue to make strong for the maintenance of the transporter.
