The Bargerveen is the largest contiguous raised bog area in the Netherlands. More than 2,000 hectares remain of the once 3,000 km² Bourtanger Marsh. Here peat hills, peat moss, swamps, swamp forests and lakes form the landscape. The cycle path leads you nicely through this.

A beautiful natural area. You should be careful not to leave the signposted paths, as otherwise you can get to sandy paths or paths that cannot be traveled by bike for other reasons and in the worst case you have to push a whole piece. The signposted paths are all the better with a great view!

Peat used to be extracted here, but today - after extensive renaturation in the 1960s - there is a picturesque moorland landscape in which numerous animals, especially water birds, have found a home. You can enjoy this landscape particularly well by bike and, when you take a break, you can not only see the beautiful moor, but also the neighboring Netherlands - the cycle path runs right on the border.
