Forest cemetery on Habsberg
The establishment of the forest cemetery on Habsberg reflects an important part of the recent history of the pilgrimage. The area around the Habsberg almost fell victim to the expansion of the Hohenfels military training area in 1951.
In an effort to preserve their homeland, the citizens of Engelsberg subsequently campaigned for the establishment of a cemetery at the foot of the Habsberg.
After numerous discussions with those responsible in the responsible parishes of Utzenhofen and Oberwiesenacker and the dioceses of Regensburg and Eichstätt, the burial site for the towns around the Habsberg was created in 1960. A year later the morgue was built.
The crosses, which came from the estate of a closed cemetery, found a worthy location on Habsberg after restoration. Numerous new crosses manufactured by the Eschbach company in Velburg have been added.
As in the Rose Cemetery in Dietkirchen, the Habsberg cemetery regulations only allow wrought iron crosses and surrounds made of natural stone.
The fountain, built in 1993, symbolizes Christ as the source of divine grace that forever quenches the thirst for life.
