Averbode Bos & Heide is located around the abbey of Averbode. It is the transition from the Kempen to the Hageland. Extensive forests alternate with fens, marshes, heathland and heathland with scanty grasslands. Beautiful nature to take a walk.

Here the nature workers have done a fantastic job, the heathland that has arisen here is beautiful! The pools are also gems. Where 30 years ago everything was still sufficient here with monotonous pine forests, these beautiful natural areas have now arisen. This area is extremely expensive, but also vulnerable!

Freely accessible on the hiking trails all year round. In rainy weather and in winter, sturdy shoes or boots are necessary. Strollers can go in some lanes, but on the forest paths it becomes difficult. Dogs are welcome, but always on a leash of course. The paved avenues are accessible to wheelchair users. There are also specific trails for horse riders and mountain bikers.

It is very important that everyone stays on the paths specifically designated for them, so that others are not disturbed. It is not allowed to leave the paths, swim in the fens or play with the dog, nor to have a barbecue.

People have changed the landscape in Averbode Bos & Heide several times. The history of the area is best known since the foundation of the Abbey of Averbode by the Premonstratensians. Thanks to those brothers, the area was known for its high natural value.

This came to an end when the area fell into the hands of the noble de Merode family after Belgian independence in 1830. The forests suddenly had to yield. Wood extraction led to one-sided management, causing many species to disappear.

In 2004, the De Merode family sold 1,500 hectares of their land. On behalf of the Flemish government and at the proposal of Natuurpunt, the Flemish Land Company purchased the entire area. The sub-areas were then sold to the various partners who together signed the 'charter de Merode' to maintain the unity of the area. Averbode Bos & Heide is one sub-area.

The abbey tower of the Premonstratensian Abbey always helps you find your way back. If you start west, you will soon come to the Weefberg, an iron sandstone hill. In the eastern corner of the forest and the Turnhoutse Baan is the Bierhoeve, an old forester's house from the noble period with its own moat. The toothache chapel is an ideal place to listen to the vibrant song of nightjars in the twilight of a June evening or to watch the woodcocks perform their courtship flights above the woods.

When the de Merode family sold their 1,500-hectare estate in 2004, many agencies and organisations seized the opportunity to protect the forests from fragmentation. The largest part of the estate is Averbode Bos & Heide and was largely purchased by Natuurpunt. In the following years, a nature development project and a LIFE project were carried out in Averbode Bos & Heide.

There is still so much going on here that you want to come back every year to see the innovations and how the planned works continue to add to the beauty of this area - and in recent years you have seen more and more water and fens.

Intensive forestry and hunting practices caused many of the area's plants and animals to disappear. The purchase of the area was the first step in the upgrading of this special landscape. Averbode Bos en Heide belongs to the Natura 2000 network of internationally important nature reserves. With this initiative, the European Union wants to create a coherent network of nature reserves where the most endangered fauna and flora can revive. This mainly concerns the species and biotopes that are protected according to the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive.
With the support of the European Union's LIFE program, Natuurpunt was able to realize the nature restoration project: restoring the fens, heaths, dunes and grasslands and transforming the forest into naturally valuable forest and increasing accessibility.

Averbode is located in the Southern Kempen region. The surrounding area is dotted with hills, the highest of which is Weefberg, at 47 meters. South of Averbode flow the Demer and Hulpe rivers.
Averbode is bordered by two nature reserves: the Averbode forest and heathland to the north and the Demerbroeken to the south.
