Between 1840 and 1910, Pahlhude was the largest port on the west coast of Holstein. With the construction of the Kiel Canal, however, shipping on the Eider almost came to a standstill.

The fishermen of the Eider sold their catch as far away as Hamburg and Bremen. Sturgeons were particularly sought after, as they could secure a whole year's income if they were of the right size. When the Eider dam was built in 1937, the sturgeon could no longer get into the Eider and fishing also came to a standstill.

Other information boards also provide information about the brickworks located here and the life of the brickmaker families. At the harbor there are a few places to rest directly on the Eider.

In the second half of the 19th century, Pahlen developed into an industrial town due to the brickworks and the cement factory, with the port becoming very important. The railroad opened up the hinterland to the port, and the Pahlen stockyard in Pahlhude was soon better known in the country than the old village community. The sports club founded in 1908 called itself "TSV Frisch auf Pahlhude".

Life pulsated in the port area with the cement factory, the train station and several restaurants. Many ships were based in the port, which explains why Pahlen could be reached under the postal code Pahlhude for a long time. The post office of the postal agent Jakob Bielenberg was at this time in house no. 18 (Harald Frahm lives there today) in Pahlhude. It was not until 1930 that the post office moved to Mühlenberg, to house no. 6 (Masuch) and then to Haus Hansen (Bömer), today there is no longer a post office.

But there have never been two towns. The political community was always Pahlen, even if Pahlhude left his name to the whole place for a while. The First World War heralded the decline of Pahlen's industry and the port lost its importance, and the railway was dismantled in 1938. Today Pahlhude is a district of Pahlen, so to speak the Pahlen stacking place on the Eider.
