HISTOUR point T13 | Mountain Dutchman "Fortuna"

The Dörplinger Bergholländer "Fortuna" was built in 1853 by the Heide mill builder Christian Claussen, a brother-in-law of the poet Klaus Groth. It was covered with thatch. Its technical equipment consisted of two courses, since 1884 four courses. In 1893 the sails were replaced by flap wings. A serious accident happened in 1895. The miller's two-year-old son was playing on the Mühlenberg and was killed by one of the wings.

1910 ended the production of wheat flour. The miller only concentrated on the grist milling. During a strong storm in 1927/28 the wings turned the wrong way round. By throwing grain on the gears, it was possible to bring the frantic run to a standstill. The result was severe damage to the comb wheel. When a wing broke in the winter of 1938/39, operations were suspended.

In 1965 the conversion to a weekend house began: the thatched roof was replaced by a permanent roof. In 1970 the blades of the dismantled Krumstedt mill were installed here.

Bergholländer: There are different types of Dutch windmills. With the Bergholländer, also known as the Kellerholländer, the mill seems to be on a hill. In fact, this hill is artificially raised around a basement. Access to the mill is through a cellar neck or tunnel. In older mills of this type, the mill hill was often demolished and the cellar built with warehouses, on which the mill now seems to stand. Operation is from the ground.
