Time and again, significant archaeological discoveries are made during civil engineering work in Aachen. This was also the case on the grounds of the Elisengarten. During systematic excavations between 2007 and 2010, scientists discovered around 70,000 historical objects from the Neolithic period to the late Middle Ages. The "Archaeological Display Case", a lightweight stainless steel construction by the Aachen-based firm kadawittfeldarchitektur, provides a 60 square meter view of the original 2000 square meter excavation site. The oldest finds that can be seen in the Archaeological Display Case date from the Middle Neolithic period (4700 - 4550 BC): a work station - a so-called seat stone - and half-finished stone axes.

In the middle of the Elisengarten, the remains of the former Brbarossa Wall can be viewed under glass. During excavation work, parts of the wall were found which can be assigned to the inner ring. The work on the wall began in 1172, as the city received the right to mint, market and town from Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa and therefore the citizens of the city had a city wall built, the so-called Barbarossa Wall.
