This characteristic bridge was already here in the 13th century to connect the two banks of the Meuse River. When the bridge built by the Romans collapsed, it was rebuilt in 1275 with the arches we still see today. It has only been called the Sint-Servaas Bridge since 1930. Before then, there were no other bridges over the Meuse, so people simply referred to it as "The Bridge."

The Sint Servaasbrug, called Maasbrug until 1932 and popularly called old bridge (Maastrichts: aw brögk), is a 13th-century stone arch bridge over the river Maas in the Dutch city of Maastricht. The bridge is named after the 4th-century bishop of Maastricht, Sint-Servaas, but did not get its current name until 1932; before that it was just 'the bridge', officially Maasbrug. The Sint Servaas Bridge is considered the oldest bridge in the Netherlands and an icon of the city of Maastricht. The building is a national monument.
