Beethoven House / Museum in Heiligenstadt
The Haus des Heiligenstädter Testaments or Testamentshaus is located at the address Probusgasse 6 in Heiligenstadt
From May to October 1802, Beethoven visited the mineral-rich springs of the baths in Heiligenstadt near Vienna (a suburb of Vienna until 1892) to have the gastric complaints treated, which he often suffered from in connection with severe colic. His doctor Johann Adam Schmidt also held out the prospect of a cure for his progressive hearing impairment. Beethoven lived in a detached farmhouse outside of Heiligenstadt on the way to Nussdorf at Herrengasse 6 (today: Probusgasse 6). There the 31-year-old[3] wrote a letter to his brothers on October 6, in which he emphaticly describes his concern about his deteriorating hearing, his social isolation, the thoughts of suicide that germinate and have been overcome, and regulates his estate. Although he wrote a postscript on October 10th, folded and sealed the sheet of paper, he did not send the letter, which was only found in the estate in 1827.
