Middelburg and Aardenberg have something in common: treasures in the ground. These two polder villages had more flair in the Middle Ages than today. Middelburg was a moated and walled castle town in the 15th century. Aardenburg was already inhabited in the 2nd century AD. By Romans. Numerous impressive finds were (and are) made in both villages.
This walk starts in Middelburg, where the structure of the village is still the same as more than 500 years ago. Only the houses have changed. They are built on top of the remnants of that time. The church is all that remains of the original castle town. Middelburg has barely 1 café-restaurant, Convent Santa Clara. Check in advance whether it is open. It is a restaurant, but you are also welcome for a drink or a snack. Aardenburg is slightly more vibrant. Centrally on De Kaai you will find Het Kleine Café, a must for a stopover. You can also eat and drink here. So plan your route carefully. Count on an hour to get from Middelburg to Aardenburg. Count on about four hours of walking for the complete tour.
