Hitzacker is a small cozy place with comparatively good infrastructure for cyclists. I took the ferry to the other shore and drove to Neu Darchau, where I took the ferry back to the other shore and back to Hitzacker. This section is a bit rippled and not so close to the river, but still very beautiful with forest passage.

Already around 3,000 years ago, the first people settled on the lake in Hitzacker. In the middle of Hitzacker rises the already visible from afar vineyard, which is one of the northernmost vineyards in Germany. It has been proven that for the first time in 1521, wine was grown here under Ernest the Confessor. A devastating hailstorm in 1713 destroyed all the vines. Since 1980, wine is grown again and the Hidesaker vineyard droplets are won. Not only the 99 vines are something special, also the unique view from the vineyard to the river landscape Elbe and the old town of Hitzacker will inspire you. During a stroll through the historic city island enclosed by Elbe and Jeetzel, houses tell of their history and their sometimes famous inhabitants.

The city of Hitzacker (Elbe) has also made a name for itself as a venue for important music festivals. In winter, the music week Hitzacker takes place under the artistic direction of Ludwig Güttler. In summer, connoisseurs of fine chamber music meet for the Summer Music Festival Hitzacker.
The small 5,000-soul village offers its guests the opportunity to enjoy health after Kneipp. In the village there are Kneipp stations and numerous resting places, where you can simply switch off, take a deep breath and do something good for the soul and body. Unique is the woody and abundant environment in the middle of the biosphere reserve Niedersächsische Elbtalaue, which offers a variety of exploration opportunities.

Beautiful view of the Elbe and sandy beach on the banks of the Elbe. You can cross the Elbe here on foot or by bike on a small Elbe ferry. Also a nice location to take photos, e.g. during sunrise or sunset time.
