“The imposing half-timbered house testifies to the wealth of the merchants who traded in cloth. In Stade they formed their own guild, the Wandschneideramt. In the 14th century they were among the most politically influential people in the city, but later they also belonged to the leading upper class. Only a few buildings were spared from the city fire in 1659. The house at Bäckerstraße 1/3 was one of them. It differs from the other secular buildings in the old town not only in its age, but also in its orientation: the eaves and not the gable face the street.
The current semi-detached house originally also included the house at Hökerstraße 33. It extends over twelve axes and has three floors. Between these and under the eaves it projects onto it on profiled consoles.
26 painted shell and fan rosettes above the carved consoles give the house its magnificent appearance. The numerous windows also contribute to this, although some of them were later extended. Changes were also made on the left side of the ground floor. On the right, however, the basement was originally on a solid brick base with large granite blocks. In the 19th century, the building was divided into two houses, and the house at Hökerstrasse 33 was also separated.
